Queensland community services portable long service (QLeave)

Queensland has a portable long service scheme for community services workers, run by QLeave. You qualify after 7 years. The earliest you can claim from QLeave is January 2028. Until then, long service leave is only claimable from your employer.

The state long service leave calculator does not apply to this scheme. If you are covered, your leave is worked out and paid by QLeave under its own rules. Check your service record with the scheme.

Who is covered

  • Workers employed by a community services provider in Queensland to perform, support, supervise or manage community services work.
  • Full-time, part-time, casual, contract and labour-hire workers.
  • Sole traders can choose to join.

When you qualify

You need 7 years (2,555 credits). The earliest QLeave claim is January 2028.

What you get

You get 6.1 weeks for each 2,555 days of service, plus pro rata for extra days (s 73(1)). The amount is based on your moderated wages and the current classification rate (s 74). Each payment must be at least 5 days unless it is your last (s 74(3)).

Leaving early, illness, retirement and death

  • There is no pro rata payment below 7 years. The Act has no leaving-the-industry, retirement, age or incapacity payment. You are entitled only at 2,555 days (s 73).
  • Death: a personal representative can claim if the worker already had an entitlement (s 72(4)).
  • Payment instead of leave is only possible under an industrial instrument plus a written agreement with QLeave and your employer, or with 2,555 days and an industrial commission order (s 72(2)-(3)).
  • Your registration is cancelled after more than 4 consecutive years with no service.

How it is paid

QLeave pays you from the fund, from January 2028. Until then, long service leave is only claimable from your employer. If you have not given your tax file number, tax is taken at 49%.

How to claim

Register for the QLeave community services worker portal at https://portal.qleave.qld.gov.au/Public/Member?cfid=1&returnUrl=. QLeave's 'How to make a claim' page explains the steps. Claims to QLeave open from January 2028.

Before you rely on this

  • No QLeave claims can be paid before January 2028.
  • Leaving the sector before 7 years gives you nothing from the scheme (s 73).
  • A Bill before the Queensland Parliament in 2026 (Industrial Relations and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2026, cl 15) would change the cash-out rules in s 72(2)-(3). Check whether it has passed.
  • No tax file number means tax at 49%.
