NSW community services portable long service leave

NSW started a portable long service scheme for community services workers on 1 July 2025. It is run by the Long Service Corporation. Your service follows you between community services employers in NSW, and you can be outside the sector for up to 4 years without losing it.

The state long service leave calculator does not apply to this scheme. If you are covered, your leave is worked out and paid by Long Service Corporation (LSC) under its own rules. Check your service record with the scheme.

Who is covered

  • Paid full-time, part-time and casual staff doing community service work in NSW. Schedule 1 of the Act lists 31 service types.
  • Staff of an employer whose main purpose is community services.
  • Labour-hire workers.
  • Self-employed contractors may opt in.
  • Not covered: residential aged care, and early childhood education and care.

When you qualify

You need 7 years (2,555 days) of recognised service. Foundation workers, who joined in the first 6 months of the scheme, need 6 years because they receive a 1-year bonus.

What you get

You get about 6.1 weeks after 7 years, then 0.8667 weeks for each additional 365 days. The payment is P = 0.8667 x (D / 365) x R, where D is your days of service and R is your highest average ordinary weekly wage over the last 2, 4, 20 or 28 quarters. Leave is taken in blocks of at least 2 weeks.

Leaving early, illness, retirement and death

  • Pro rata payment with at least 5 years of recognised service after you permanently leave the industry. You claim 10 or more weeks after leaving, with no further service.
  • If a worker dies with at least 5 years of service, their representative can claim.
  • Your service is kept for up to 4 years while you are outside the sector.

How it is paid

The Long Service Corporation pays you directly. Tax is withheld through Single Touch Payroll. If you are entitled to long service leave under the Long Service Leave Act 1955 or an enterprise agreement, you take that leave from your employer.

How to claim

Claim through the Long Service Corporation's worker portal at https://lsl.longservice.nsw.gov.au/suite/?signin=workerportal. If you are still working, plan leave of at least 2 weeks. If you have left the sector, wait at least 10 weeks before claiming.

Before you rely on this

  • The scheme started on 1 July 2025. Check your recorded service in the worker portal.
  • Aged care and early childhood education and care are outside this scheme.
  • If you already have long service leave from your employer under the 1955 Act or an agreement, take it from your employer.
