Tested against the official examples

State regulators publish worked examples of long service leave calculations. Every time the site is built, the calculator is run on each one and compared with the government's own figure. This page shows the result.

How the comparison works

Each example's facts (service, reason for leaving, hours, pay, unpaid leave and leave already taken) are entered into the same calculation engine visitors use. A figure matches when it agrees with the official figure to the precision the government published, for example to two decimal places of a week.

“Matches, official rounded” means the government printed a rounded figure (for example 7 weeks for 7.03, or 4.76 where its calculator cuts off rather than rounds), and our unrounded figure agrees with it at that precision.

A few official examples round an in-between figure before multiplying. Where that happens, we test the method with the government's own rounded figure and say so.

Where an official example has an error

Sometimes a published example does not add up on its own figures. The calculator works the figure out from the rule rather than copying the printed number.

  • ACT: WorkSafe ACT calculation guideline Example 3 publishes $2,876.60; its own inputs give $474 x 6.0667 = $2,875.62. Calculate, don't copy.
  • VIC: Business Victoria publishes Dragan's 260-week average as $1,661.53; its own inputs give $1,653.85.
  • WA: The official WA calculator gives 7.23 or 7.24 weeks for the Riley example depending on start date; engine tests allow +/-0.01.
  • SA: A worker who resigns without giving the required notice can lose pro-rata long service leave (guide example Ajay). Use reason code resignation_without_required_notice; the employer 'has the legal option to withhold', so show it as a risk rather than a certain zero.
